Responsible and sustainable business in B2B marketing, media and publishing
Corporate Social Responsibility
CSR is an integral part of our business and we focus our efforts around sveral key areas where we think we can make a difference:
Overall paper usage:
As paper is the largest raw material we use, we work hard to make sure that whatever we print, we do in a way that is ethically responsible and environmentally sustainable. In the last 3 years, we have phased out 90% of our events brochures for the 30-40 events we produce each year. We have also taken major initiatives to stop printing marketing brochures, media kits and other related marketing collaterals when the content can be published online.
Reduction of printed publications circulation:
In the last year, we have stopped accepting paid subscriptions and the physical mailing to overseas readers for our printed magazine and directory. For qualified readers based in Greater China, we have also decided to cap the print circulation at 10,000 with an additional plan to reduce this number by half over the next five years. As a result, we are now gradually moving these subscribers to our digital and iPad editions and the response has been very positive.
Recycling of returned or unsold magazines:
Chain Media is economically strongly incentivised to minimise unsold magazines and we employ sophisticated techniques to help achieve this. More than 90% of Chain Media's unsold magazines are recycled. We also support the PPA’s initiative encouraging readers to recycle their magazines after use and we incorporate the WRAP recycle logo in our magazine.
Restriction of fax & printer usage:
Chain Media runs an internal initiative to encourage employees to use less paper in their daily work. Printing is discouraged at all levels of employees and faxes are only printed when necessary and/or notified in advance. With the amount of spam faxes received each day at our office, the amount of paper wasted has been greatly reduced.
Recycling of delegates badges:
With over a thousand of delegates each year, Chain Media uses a lot of plastic badges for its attendees. With the cooperation of its employees, each attendees is requested to hand over its plastic badge and lanyard at exit of the event, to be then re-used for another event.
CD-roms & plastic covers:
In the last year, we have phased out the use of CD-roms with 95% of our conferences and summits. We are now looking at online alternatives for sharing presentation materials.
Supplier payment policy:
Chain Media's policy is to pay all suppliers when their invoices become contractually due for payment. At June 1st 2011, Chain Media had no trade creditors.
Ethics and human rights:
Chain Media supports the standards set out in the UN Global Compact on the Responsibilities of Business, and endorses the principle that no child, underage, forced, or prison labour should be employed; that no-one is denied a job because of gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, affiliation or association, and that factories comply with laws protecting the environment.
